Kodály's 60 progressive two-part songs were written in memory of his school friends in Galanta.
Most are based on the music of the Hungarian peasant community and Geoffrey Russell-Smith has endeavoured to convey the meaning as accurately as possible in his translations.
Some references to specific Hungarian places and historical events have been retained.
